University of Rwanda Students Explore Legal Translation at the Rwanda Law Reform Commission

A delegation of students from the University of Rwanda, enrolled in translation and interpretation programs at the National Police Academy, recently undertook a study tour to gain insights into the work of the Rwanda Law Reform Commission (RLRC) concerning legal translation. This educational initiative was aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in translating legal documents.

Accompanied by their esteemed lecturers, the students were warmly received by the Rwanda Law Reform Commission, where they were provided with an in-depth overview of the tools and methodologies employed by the Commission in the translation of legal instruments.

During the visit, the students were introduced to several key resources utilized by the Commission in its translation endeavors:

  1. Guidelines on Legislative Drafting: These guidelines play a pivotal role in ensuring that translations adhere to the established protocols for drafting laws in Rwanda. They serve as a comprehensive reference for maintaining accuracy and consistency in legal translations.
  2. Dictionary of Legal Terms: The Commission maintains a meticulously curated dictionary containing legal terminologies and glossaries translated into English, French, and Kinyarwanda. This invaluable resource serves as a reliable reference tool for translators, facilitating the accurate interpretation of legal texts across multiple languages.
  3. Various Translation Techniques: The students were also acquainted with a range of translation techniques employed by the Commission to ensure the fidelity and integrity of legal content during the translation process. These techniques include both Literal and Oblique translation methods, which are strategically employed to preserve the original legal meaning while effectively conveying it in the target language. The techniques encompass literal translation, borrowing, transposition, equivalence, adaptation, and modulation.

By immersing themselves in the practical applications of these tools and techniques, the students gained invaluable insights into the complexities of legal translation and the critical role it plays in ensuring the accessibility and comprehensibility of laws across linguistic barriers.
